Body and Reality

An Examination of the Relationships between the Body Proper, Physical Reality, and the Phenomenal World Starting from Plessner and Merleau-Ponty

Body and Reality

Is materialism right to claim that the world of everyday-life experience – the phenomenal world – is nothing but an illusion produced in physical reality, notably in the brain? Or is Merleau-Ponty right when he defends the fundamental character of the phenomenal world while rejecting physical realism? Jasper van Buuren addresses these questions by exploring the nature of the body proper in Merleau-Ponty and Plessner, arguing that physical and phenomenal realism are not mutually exclusive but complementary. The argument includes a close examination of the relationships between scientific and pre-scientific perspectives, between living and non-living things, and between humans and animals.

K filosofii Heinricha Bartha.

Poněkud ve stínu hlavních představitelů filosofie existence rozvíjel její specifickou variantu také švýcarský filosof Heinrich Barth (1890-1965). Přednáška představí její hlavní pojmy – rozhodování, existenciální poznání, existenciální pravdu, kontingenci a některé další – a naznačí jejich přínos pro výklad lidské existence i jejich meze.

Místo konání: Pražské kreativní centrum, Staroměstské náměstí 4/1, Praha 1.

Difference and the Power of the Negative

The first scholarly comparative analysis of Jacques Derrida and Gilles Deleuze’s philosophies of difference

Jacques Derrida and Gilles Deleuze are best known for their respective attempts to theoretically formulate non-dialectical conceptions of difference. Now, for the first time, Vernon W. Cisney brings you a scholarly analysis of their contrasting concepts of difference. Cisney distinguishes their conceptions of difference by differentiating them on the basis of the criticisms they level against Hegel, as well as their valorisations of Nietzsche, and the ways in which they understand Nietzsche’s thought to surpass that of Hegel. The contrast between the two, Cisney argues, is that while Deleuze formulates an affirmative conception of difference, Derrida’s différance amounts to an irresolvable negativity.

  • Situates the philosophy of difference within the broader context of the history of philosophy, going back to its beginnings in Plato and Aristotle
  • Focuses on the positions that Derrida and Deleuze occupy with respect to the Hegel-Nietzsche-Heidegger triumvirate
  • Provides the first in-depth analysis of the defining distinction between Derrida and Deleuze, out of which most of the other differences (ethical, political, etc.) between the two can be more richly understood
  • Offers an original understanding of the history and trajectory of continental philosophy specifically, rooted in an engagement with Husserl’s time-consciousness analysis and in Deleuze’s adoption of Bergson’s thinking

Vernon W. Cisney is Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Gettysburg College. He is the author of Deleuze and Derrida: Difference and the Power of the Negative (Edinburgh University Press, 2018) and Derrida’s Voice and Phenomenon: An Edinburgh Philosophical Guide (Edinburgh University Press, 2014). He is also the co-editor of Between Foucault and Derrida (Edinburgh University Press, 2016); The Way of Nature and the Way of Grace: Philosophical Footholds on Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life (Northwestern University Press, 2016); and Biopower: Foucault and Beyond (University of Chicago Press, 2015).

Heidegger's Poietic Writings

Engaging the development of Heidegger’s non-public writings on the event between 1936 and 1941, Daniela Vallega-Neu reveals what Heidegger’s private writings kept hidden. Vallega-Neu takes readers on a journey through these volumes, which are not philosophical works in the traditional sense as they read more like fragments, collections of notes, reflections, and expositions. In them, Vallega-Neu sees Heidegger searching for a language that does not simply speak about being, but rather allows a sense of being to emerge in his thinking and saying. She focuses on striking shifts in the tone and movement of Heidegger’s thinking during these important years. Skillfully navigating the unorthodox and intimate character of these writings, Vallega-Neu provides critical insights into questions of attunement, language, the body, and historicity in Heidegger’s thinking.

Held, Klaus: Der biblische Glaube

This book uses the means of a phenomenology of the world based freely on Husserl and Heidegger to design a new systematic interpretation of the belief in the one God that originated in Israel and persists in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The phenomenological analysis of monotheism, as compared to other methods of interpretation, is able to render both its origin and its conceivable future more distinct and clear. The main feature of this origin is the self-distinction of the biblical belief in the one desert God, who deliberately withholds himself from any lifeworldly intuition, from the (at least in this respect) somewhat more plausible polytheism. A possible future is marked by a tragedy: antipolytheist faith, in its Christian variety, drives itself into ruin precisely because, in the age of the globalized experience of the one world, it eventually attains its pure form and in so doing succumbs to a radical oblivion of the lifeworld.
